Beginning Typography
Project 1: Letterforms
You will use your initials to create compositions that explore and study typographic form within a frame.
You will work on two compositions, both in square proportions. In the first you will mix weights from
the same typeface, and in the second you will mix weights from different typefaces, with the aim of
making the compositions as different as possible. The final pieces must be as impactful as possible while
keeping the letters perfectly legible.

Project 2: Words in Action
You will use two words picked at random to create the meaning of the word in action. Two compositions
in square proportions, the words I was given were migrate and fierce.

Project 3: Lecture about a Typographer Poster
You will choose a typographer from the list provided. After thorough research on the typographer’s work,
you will develop a title that summarizes a key aspect of their legacy. You will then express the meaning
of this title—typographically—in the design of a poster announcing a lecture about their life and work

Project 4: Event Materials
You will design an event poster for either 2011 SF Sketchfest (Comedy Festival) or 2011 Noir City
(Film Noir Festival), containing detailed information about the shows and venues. You will then
extend your design solution to apply to other materials aimed to promote and support the event.
